ReplyDelete1. formative assesment: am all for it.
benefits - bit sized assessment that are more manageable for students and this also allows a higher possibility for all to taste success in all subjects.
2. carnival - err... no *thinking hard...* still no :) why? too much resources involved.
3. circle time for sec 1: agree but needs to be structured. teachers will not know what exactly to cover within time alloted. it would be good if there is some sort of progressive attainment of perhaps values (NE or otherwise) or some tracking on the impact of relationships as a result of circle time.
4. info literacy lessons: again needs to be structured.
Circle Time :Don't know what's exactly been shared during SMC but I heard about the circle time for Sec 1. I think its a good level to start . Teachers must be clear about the objectives, the Do's and Don'ts. I'm told that there must be a physical circle during circle time. Teachers and pupils must be familiar with the 'tricks' of going in and out of circle time without wasting valuable time.
ReplyDeleteCarnival : Really need more detail on this to comment. Did carnivals before... it can be simple or a really complicated one... either way can the objectives be met with less effort and time.. ?

Hello..
ReplyDelete1. formative assessment: totally up for it. bite assessment is the in thing right now and it will help to booast sudents' motivation.
2. carnival: very big project which has good outcomes but maybe not to be done yearly.
3. Circle time is good to instil values and build rapport with form teachers. But having t weekly may be tiring and draining for form teachers. Good if can infuse it in homeroom period. If there is a need to be weekly, then must have SOW and lesson packages to support the system so teachers are well guided in this new initiative.
4. Info literacy classes is good as we embark in today's digital world. But must be structured. IP depts can follow up with having dept project works for students to practice and apply skills learnt in info literacy classes and not just for IPW so that it becomes more meaningful.
formative assessment - must be clear about the objectives and the learning that must take place before assessment [ie well structured / timely etc ] . Also need to clear about the feedback that is to be given and the effectiveness of the feedback. Need to structure the form of the feedback.
ReplyDeletecarnival - objectives? must be clear. Benefits must outweigh the time/effort/resources put in.
Circle time - in place of home period? or during home period? SEL objectives?- OK, but must have some structure so that all classes may use material - Each level to focus on one VALUE? Circles during curriculum time should be left to the IP depts.
info literacy - great idea. We had it before. Need to structure it properly so that it is in line with what the IP depts need for that particular year cohort.

Carnival - We can do a smaller scale carnival (like a bazaar) if we want. The student leaders have been trained to write proposal for Young ChangeMakers grant from National Youth Council. up to $3,500 seed funding.
ReplyDeleteCircle time for Sec 1 - Brilliant idea. Would be better if teachers complement this with the SEL facilitiation training that they will be receiving on the 24th of November.
formative assessment - teachers would require some scaffolding and structures
ReplyDeleteCarnival - should make it an annual event. Its an excellent platform to bring the school together as one and also partners and stakeholders like the alumni and parents.
Circle Time - Will definitely support it, main concern is to encourage more practice i.e. take the first step to try it and with time, students will be used to it and it will cut down alot on time to prepare the circles
formative assessment - gd to have to replace the common tests where the latter has always been a logistical nightmare. Only concern is: Will we be reducing the rigour of our our assessment as students need not have to revise as many chapters for the formative assessment? If this does happen, student might not adapt to the demand of SA1 & SA2.
ReplyDeletecarnival - gd idea to have as it provides opportunity to showcase students' work and projects. How about having carnival and speech day concurrently?
info literacy - gd to have but can lesson sustained throughout the whole year. We are looking at 30 lessons at least in a year per class.
Formative assessment- Good to replace CT as this will always keep the pupils on their toes for their daily week. Personally, I feel that we should even allocate a certain percentage of CA for SEL competencies instead of during IPW only.
ReplyDeleteBut can I suggest we only try it out in Sem 1? We should stick to the norm for Sem 2 to prepare the pupils for SA2 (45% of the total) unless anyone is game enough to change the weightage of SA2!
Carnival- Let's use the 5 obj in 1 event rule. If yes, please carry on! With Malek's, Martin's and Rezal's inputs, I think it easily fits the bill.
Circle Time - Should be meant for all levels if we want all teachers to practice using CT and increase quality time with form class. However I do agree that we should focus on Sec 1 for structured programme for Circle Time for a start, just like what Xiu Yan (PD Comm) had done for I-shine prog this year. Is I-shine prog going to expand to Sec 1-2 next year? If not, it is such a waste!
Info iteracy lessons - Specific cohort/All cohort? Scope/Coverage? Objectives? Outcomes/Deliverables? Department/s responsible for the deliverance?

carnival - gd idea to have as it meet all obj. But would prefer smaller scale like a bazaar. May combine with sport carnival???
ReplyDeleteinfo literacy - Yes. For 3 levels: sec1, 2 and 3. perhaps can categorize in diff level : Basic, intermediate and advanced. The level will set different skills the students would require as they progress.
